If is your first reaction when you think of a Space branch in a military?

Increased funding and prioritization of space exploration and related technologies. The US government, for better or worse, throws money at the Pentagon at alarming rates without really knowing what they're paying for except that it will help national security and secure jobs and global stability and all that jazz. With a Space Branch now in the mix, I expect far more funding - even if many of the projects get "classified".

Say what you will about Trump and the current adminstration, the press conference was inspiring and demonstrated promise and commitment. The only obstacle, as said by one of the astronauts, was political science and not rocket science.
