If you're OK with hauling your ass in and out of a pickup truck all day, you don't deserve to park in handicapped spots. You're just lazy.

Appreciate the thoughtful response, never occurred to me how a back issue would be better suited for trucks than a car. And I've had some back issues myself.

That being said, I think it's much more common that these issues arise FROM obesity instead of what you described. And in those cases, I find it much harder to sympathize.

Part of it I think has to do with how we treat these problems - if someone's obesity is so problematic that they develop issues that put them in so much discomfort that simply walking 100ft is unbearable, then we shouldn't just be sending them home with a fancy little placard for their car. Considering all of the problems it can cause, not just for that person but for loved ones as well, we should take treating obesity way more seriously. It's literally as simple as controlling what you eat, and yet much of this country treats it as if it's this disease that is impossible to get rid of. You shouldn't get rewarded for not taking care of yourself.

So yeah, if it's obesity brought on by a more complicated issue such as severe back pain, ok I get it. But if it's another issue caused by obesity? Tough luck. Maybe people would take better care of themselves knowing that they're not going to get special treatment for their poor decisions.
