This is common knowledge for many of us, but for those who don't know how IU is organized or who are familiar with internal IU politics, it's not so obvious. When any Indiana University school is brought up without a campus designation, the implication to laypeople is that IU Bloomington is being talked about.

I find this annoying when the media (and often times IU itself) fails to disclose researcher campus affiliations for IUSM research and especially annoying when campus affiliations are not disclosed for IU research that stems from schools that are not the med school.

I also think that failing to disclose the campus from which research originates hurts the city and the entire state. IUSM does more research in Indianapolis than IUB does period. IUPUI - excluding the med school but including the dental and nursing schools - does an identical amount of research as IUB. IU has a major research presence in Indianapolis, but Indianapolis (and by extension, all of Indiana) get skipped over by companies looking to bring high-paying jobs to Midwestern cities because local media and IU itself do a terrible job of bringing attention to all of IU's innovation, research, and talent creation in Indianapolis.

As somebody who was raised by a prominent IU academic and as somebody who has affiliations with IUB and IUPUI (and will soon also be affiliated with IUSM as a researcher), I know a decent amount about IU politics. IU does a lot to maintain IUB's reputation as IU's flagship campus, and this even hurts the IU system as a whole. Thankfully (and unlike President McRobbie), President Whiten seems to recognize the value of IUPUI. She's been spending half her time in Indianapolis, she is focused on expanding IU's presence in Indianapolis, and she (with the prodding of Mitch Daniels) facilitated the split between IU and Purdue at IUPUI, which will allow both schools to maximize their presence in Indianapolis.
