J.J. Abrams on Episode 9 - "I also found myself doing things that I’m not sure I would have been as daring to do on Episode 7.”

But that's the thing, for me it wasn't disappointing the in the slightest.. I knew that's where they were going with Luke and it was only enhanced by him referencing the Jedi of the prequel era, I hated Snoke, knew he was just a lame Emperor clone and everyone was wasting their time with him (there was no way in hell he was ever anyone else and TFA did not set him up to be anyone, mystery or not) and making Kylo Ren, the last Skywalker the Emperor was mind-bogglingly amazing to me, Rey nobody was a breath of fresh air for me because I was shitting my pants nervous about her being a Kenobi (probably the only thing I can think of that would make me walk away from the ST entirely with how stupid that would be)...

I went in knowing people were already outraged and I kept looking for it the entire movie and.... by the end I just could not figure out why people were angry... I was actually, sincerely baffled.

2 years later and I've heard all of the criticisms. I don't agree with pretty much any of them (bar Phasma's treatment) and I'd also definitely argue that it's much less than have of the Star Wars moviegoing audience that hated TLJ...

TFA was a great set up and TLJ was a great pay-off that avoided being a carbon copy of ESB (which I was worried about) and had enough thought put into it that I could breath a sigh of relief that Star Wars wasn't going to just fall into "popcorn entertainment Marvel fair", but be a step beyond in terms of blockbusters...
