As someone who has friends in the US film industry, one thing they tell me is that as a filmmaker, the worst thing you can do is go to film school.

Look at most of the famous directors and you’ll see them many of them didn’t go to film school and there’s a reason for it. It hinders your creative abilities and instead teaches you to create manufactured films. Uninspired, cardboard cut out pieces of work is the kind of mentality is eventually drilled into these students. It’s much better to learn an aspect of film like literature, drama/theatre, classics, psychology, philosophy than go to film school. Only film technicians should be going to film school (DOP, gaffer, editor, etc).
