January Assignment - Legendary Items

She would speak to the invisible Death even when amongst people, dress in his likeness and think in his odd ways. She became unnervingly smart and her aging process was altered making her appear forever small. And so because of this and because they felt Deaths presance humans felt nervous around her, as if something was wrong but they couldn't say just what.

Because of this, Alvena never throughout her live managed to make a lasting friend besides Death. However, she did not mind this, as she had Death by her side and he had soon become the only one she needed. And so, for a long time, Alvena continued to be a doctor and had a rather happy life. But then a cruel man thought to have found the reason for her brilliance and strangeness and claimed she was possessed by a great evil. Soon she was forced to run away and she could not find a save place in the world. But Death was still with her and would help her at all times. And while the world was against her, Death and Alvena grew closer then ever before. They became nearly inseparable and would not leave each others side anymore.

Part Two: How Alvena lost her Flower and what became of itWhat is its history? Is there a rumour about its existence? Does it have a long and bloody history? It's (secondary? magical powers?)

Alvena and Death lived together for over a year before they were finally found and caught. In their anger and fear, the people that caught her ended her live soon after and so Alvena died on a field close to a large town. And as Death took her with him to his home where she would stay from now on as his friend and helper, Deaths flower was taken by one of her murderers and thrown into a nearby river.

The Hollow swam forgotten into the sea and eventually landed on the shore of continental Europe where it was found and picked up by a small girl in France. The girl liked it, took it home with her and put it in a a box where she soon forgot about it. One day, however, many years later, there was a war and the box was taken by a soldier and brought to the Holy Roman Empire. There he found the flower and gave it to his wife who put it in her hair. Soon after there was a loud scream and the wife was lying shaking on the ground, with the flower next to her, claiming to have seen Death. The couple decided to bring the flower to the local church, where the priest tried in vain to destroy it. He decided it was cursed and locked it away inside the church. It was not there long however, as somebody heard the tale and out of curiosity and disbelieve stole Deaths Flower. He had heard what was supposed to have happened to the soldiers wife, so he put the flower in his hair. And saw Death in front of him. He stared at him in terror and threw the flower away from himself as he fell backwards to the ground in attempt to run away. When some townsfolk found him next to the flower, they threw it into a nearby river and it was swept to Bavaria. There it was found and simular events, more of them this time, happened yet again and Deaths Flower was disposed of in the Donaube. Eventually, a young woman fished it out of the water in another land and put it in her hair. She saw Death and looked at him silently, before greeting him politely and asking him what was going on. He explained her calmly and she nodded before taking the flower off and going home with it. She did not want to use it, but also wished to keep the wonderous item. So she told her family, who suggested she plant the flower if she liked it so much. Maybe it would grow. And the girl did and the flower grew. She planted Deaths Flower in their backyard in the outer part of Vienna sometimes in the 14th century and so ended the journey of the Hollow. From there on, Deaths Flower stood inside the city and it's roots filled the earth beneath it. After a few years, the flowers magical powers had sunken into the ground and started to affect the city and its people. While they could never actually see Death, they felt his presence more strongly than they should and Death himself found it a good place to be. He soon became a part of their lives, part of the city. The magic also made the city a popular place for the undead as well as wizards that studied them. The flower was soon forgotten and paved over and the wizards that lived close never heard of it. To this day, Deaths Flower is hidden somewhere beneath the city of Vienna, it's invisible roots filling the earth there. But for many hundred years, it has not been seen and the exact place it was planted is long forgotten. And no wizard had ever even known of the powerful items true identity.

Because barley a wizard ever even heard of Deaths Flower, and it's powers are said to strike fear instead of desire by the muggles, it has never been sought after. Thanks to this, it's history is not very bloody or even very exiting. The only blood it ever spilled was Alvenas. It found it's way to it's current location by coincidence and has not been moved for a very long time. And it's powers stay unknown and lost to both the magical and the non magical world. Of course, there are still some old stories about a Cursed Flower in Germany or a strange doctor in England and Deaths relationship with Vienna, amongst the non magical folks at least and sometimes a wizard or two might have suggested the flower to be a powerful magical item. However, since it never became known to the wizard community that there even was a fourth Deathly Hollow or that the flower in fact was a real magical item, the idea was soon disregarded as a muggle fairy tale. Only Viennas properties were still aknowledged, but not for the correct reason of course.

Part Three: Ottokar IIs Curse, Baron Berchtolds Flower and Alvena and the DeamonWhat is the legend of the hallow?

The legends that were created because of Alvena and Deaths Flower in the non magical world are plenty. This is mostly due to the many different places that were involved and that usually only saw or heared about a part of the story - be it the strange Doctor, the cursed flower or the secondary effects of the flowers magic. So, over time, all these things had several different legends built around them, often not written down until the 19th century and usually far away from the actual history. Out of all these stories, I have here collected three that I think are quite good.

The first legend deals with the consequences Vienna had to deal with after becoming affected by the Flowers magic. It goes as follows:

After the Peace of Vienna was declared in 1261, when Premysl Ottokar II. stepped into the streets of the city, he was furious and cursed the cities name to death. He exclaimed as loud as he could and in front of everyone on the street, something along the lines of " ****** **** ***** Vienna! Death shall get you!" In fact, he was so mad that his curse became powerful enough to be picked up by the mythical power he had called who took it very serious and acted upon it immediately. And so, without Ottokars knowledge, he caused the city of Vienna to fall into the hands of Death. The Grim Reaper is stuck with the city of Vienna to this day, as nobody made him leave or lifted the curse yet. And the people of Vienna were actually weird enough to befriend him.

This legend is especially interesting because it was not created by the people of Vienna themselves but some folks from Styria. They probably thought it was funny to spread a rumour about the city being cursed and, just to spite the people there a bit more, claimed that it was done by someone they thought positively of. And all but the people of Vienna themselves believe the non magical part of it now. Styrians are brats...

The second legend is the one of Baron Berchtolds Flower. It goes like this:

In the HRE, very close to the French border, Baron Berchtold owned some land and a few subjects in the 13th century. He also possessed the most beautiful garden there was, which he loved dearly. One day, his nation went to war with France and the garden was destroyed. When Berchtold came back to his home to see that only a single flower was still alive, he became mad. And in his madness, he had all his subjects, even the children, brought to the flower where he killed every last one of them, letting their corpses fall to the ground right next to the flower. This evil deed was seen by a fairy, who cursed the now bloody flower. After his murdering, Berchtold touched the flower and as he did this, the Grim Reaper seemed to appear before him. The fear and shock killed him and he fell, ripping the flower out. From this day on, everyone who touched the never decaying flower would see the same horrible image and die - several people fell victim to this it is said. It is also said that the flower was once brought to Bavaria, where some cases of the flowers curse were reported, or even further away somehow, though nothing is really known about it's current whereabouts.

The third one is the legend of Alvena and her working years with a Deamon. It is probably the one closest to the actual story:

There was a girl once in the north of England called Alvena who made a deal with a deamon to become a great doctor. The deamon agreed to help her and the two traveld together, with Alvena claiming to be a doctor and the Deamon telling her what she had to do. They soon became very well known, healing uncurable patients working miracles. Even the royal family once pardond her when she was accused of a murder - which she commited. Because the deamon would tell her sometimes to kill a patient so he could devour their soul. And foul Alvena agreed. Eventually someone found out Alvenas secret and hunted her down. She was hung the next day on a hill that she is said to haunt to this day.
