Japanese React to Death Note (2017)

I think the problem – in the West at least – is similar to that of the recent "feminism" voices that have cropped up. The issue is fine in theory but it gets overblown and championed by a select few that poison the image. It doesn't mean the original issue isn't there any more but it does dissuade people from supporting it, as to avoid the association.

For me I've agreed and been critical of casting decisions before, even if the cast turns out fine in the finished production. I've been less so recently though because of the Ghost in the Shell controversy. I feel ScarJo is a really good casting fit for the Major, she really does pull off the look as well as any 'live-action from animation' can. Kusanagi was also an android, so with those two things in mind I really didn't get the furore. Yes, Asian-Americans have an issue with being cast, but it really seemed a poor example to further highlight it with. Movements need to be selective with upset as it's dependent on validity. The further removed from the direct issue faced, the less people will agree and participate. This leaves the more OTT or emotional crowd with more a voice, which further compounds the problem.
