Judge: IP-Address Doesn’t Identify a Movie Pirate

That sounds nice and simple.

We start at 0.

Every year with no applicable incidents (more on that after) is one point put on your license. Each point is worth a 2% discount on your insurance (maximum 20%, although you continue to accumulate points).

Any applicable incidents subtract between 3 and 6 points. Three being something like "not wearing your seatbelt" and six being "at fault collision".

If your points ever dip below zero, you're immediately charged $25 for every point below zero that you're at and have 90 days to pay.

So if you drive safely for four years then get in an at fault accident, you owe them $50. If you get dinged for not signalling, now you owe them an additional $125. There's no limit to how far in the hole you can go as long as you can keep paying.

Thankfully, however, the demerits are mostly calculated based on the evidence they have for "how likely this is to cost us money", so speeding less that 35kph over the speed limit (unless it's in a school or construction zone) doesn't apply any demerits.

This all goes out the window if you do something that's in the 'super bad' categories, though. If you're caught leaving the scene of a collision or street racing, you immediately go to -20 and are charged $500.

Unless you do something 'super-super bad' like have a 0.08% BAC, then you get sent to -20 but have to pay a $1250 fine. (On top of the other ~$9k worth of shit and criminal charges.)

Unless you do something 'super-super-super bad' like refuse a breathalyzer and demand a blood test, then you go to -20 with a $2250 fine.

Unless you're literally Hitler and kill someone, then you go to -20 and are charged $2500. (Add a murder onto your dangerous driving for only a $250 upcharge!)

I mean, sure, the 20% off my insurance is nice... But I feel like this system could be much simpler.
