Went deer hunting for the first time last year and the guy showing me the ropes lent me a crossbow. Not saying I wouldn't have gotten into the sport if I had to learn a compound bow right off the bat, but it made it less intimidating to get into it. I think for beginners, younger or weaker people, or someone with a disability cross bows are awesome.

I do however think crossbows are kinda cheating, and the second I feel capable enough to make an ethical kill with a compound I'm gonna switch. I may still use a crossbow from time to time, but I think it does take something out of it. Doesn't really matter though beyond ego and pride, I'm sure if it becomes an issue your states DNR will take care of it.
