Libraries per 10.000 people

Why would anyone want to read from a book?

  1. Not dependent on electricity. Paper books don't have batteries that need to be recharged every few days.

  2. An e-book's (or other electronic device's) software could malfunction, and your texts would be inaccessible.

  3. Harder to physically break; much longer lifespan.

  4. You can quickly tell how far you are in a paper book by the location of the bookmark.

  5. Staring at a screen for too long causes eye strain; staring at paper for the same amount of time does not.

  6. The human brain registers printed words as objects and subconsciously records their physical location on a page and that page's location within the book, which is important because of evolution. You can't do that with e-books/computers/smartphones. (link.

  7. Paper feels nice.
