Looking for advice, a buddy, maybe just someone who understands

This is the best advice that I can give based on my personal experience:

  • Dieting is difficult for me, but it takes around three days up to a week to get used to the new meal plan. Don't beat yourself up if you don't see an immediate loss in weight (especially if you also started exercising) but pride yourself in that you have stuck on your diet as far as you have, one day at a time. If you have external factors such as a social gathering that might lead you to have a little cheat meal, enjoy your meal and don't beat yourself up over it.
  • If you are using MFP or counting calories, make sure to recalculate your caloric needs every 5 lbs lost or so. Losing weight also means you need less calories, so if you're hitting a plateau it might just mean you have reached maintenance TDEE at that specific weight.
  • Don't be afraid of the gym! Try fitness classes. Nobody cares (or should care) what the others are up to in the class. Everyone has been a beginner at some point. You might make friends that have similar goals and will motivate you to keep coming. Instructors should love what they do and must want to motivate you and see you get better. If not, find a better gym.
  • Focus on goals that are not weight oriented. For example, let's say that you want to be able to jump rope for a certain amount of time, run a 5k under 25 minutes, do 30 push-ups (this one was my personal goal), etc. I found that I was able to see improvements faster in strength and endurance, and as I focused on these, progress in weight loss pretty much happened on its own. Seeing that I was able to lose weight and that I just might be able to keep up a healthy diet, I was able to motivate myself to stray away from junk food and emotional eating.

You can do it!
