Why do a lot of Americans have such a negative opinion on socialism even if it's democratic socialism?

well - one thing is that most of those Scandinavian countries people cite as democratic socialism don't actually consider themselves socialist. during the 2016 campaign for example, Denmark publicly said 'stop calling us socialist'(https://www.thelocal.dk/20151101/danish-pm-in-us-denmark-is-not-socialist) in response to Bernie using them as an example of democratic socialism.

yes, these countries have significantly bigger welfare states for the poor, but their actual economies are more free-market than even the US. an act like dodd-frank (something i support!) would never be passed in sweden, norway, or denmark. the government does provide many more benefits to its people, but they also interfere in the economy significantly less.

to be clear - i personally do support many of the ideas that the "democratic socialists" want for the country, but it's not socialism, its capitalism. it's just as much capitalism as our current system, just in a different way.
