Married people of Reddit, how is your relationship with your in-laws? Is having in-laws as bad as popular culture would lead you to believe?

My ex-inlaws were actually great. They knew when to step in and when to not step in with problems and child rearing. They understood marriage means their son needed to cleave and create a new allegiance to a spouse and that his children come first. I had no jealous mother in law, no overbearing parenting advice, no mean father in law, no terrible family functions, they didn't just show up unannounced, both tried to have a good relationship with me, and we were all respectful. Really the best situation you could have and it helped the marriage because they modeled a good marriage.

When you marry someone you become part of the family so I think it's important to have a good relationship there. It's something I look at when deciding on a serious relationship now.
