It doesn't have to be that way. Ratings and sales, like with television, are the only things these companies understand. If they get low ratings, and that contributes to low sales, maybe they'll listen and go with something more sustainable and friendly towards consumers in the future.

Of course they can listen: remove support for PC, as it has smaller market share and that is where the most toxicity and review bombing comes from. Problem solved. /s Seriously, there is no chance a sane developer would drop PlayStation or Xbox while they are the largest markets for AAA games, even those acclaimed for being consumer friendly do not do that. I can see smaller consoles like the Switch getting killed this way, but all that achieves is Microsoft and Sony monopolizing the market. Which is the problem with any sort of well intentioned but misguided political crusading, it can do harm just as much as it can do good.
