METALLICA in 1985

Agreed. A lot of people here are going to disagree with you and even call you age-ist but the overwhelming majority of anything notable in the music (and artistic) world were accomplished by that age group. Yes, there are exceptions but only a few. I've debated about this many times. Its my opinion that one of the reasons for any kind of decline in popularity or recognition, beyond oversaturation (ie Van Halen sounding the same after a while) is that, ironically, you pick up greater skill and tend to overcomplicate these things whether it be songwriting, melodic composition, or just simply running out of juice (and claiming that its because they want to go in another direction); Springsteen, Sting, Pearl Jam in that order. When you're younger, there's a certain clarity in finding that musical foundation which you can then build on top of.
