I’m seriously considering a sudden move to Australia, alone at 23 years old, from the US. What do I need to know?

I’m an American going to OZ for med school, just some realistic outlook for you. You need a bachelor degree with 3.0+/4.0 plus the MCAT if you decide to go to a American school and finish residency, you could come to OZ as a specialist pathway path. This is like 4+4+3-7years so you can expect to move to Australia after 11 to 15 years if you decide to move to OZ with USA MD. Oh yeah you’ll most likely be debt 300-400k debt.

If you decide to go to OZ for med school, you need a bachelor from USA. 3.0+/4.0 and a MCAT score of 504-510 depending on which school you’re interested in. Sydney and Melbourne are the most competitive ones with 510+, mind you MCAT is a 8 hour exam and takes 3 months if you have a strong science background up to 1-2 years to study for (including retakes). OZ med school as a international student cost 300-350k usd once you add in the living cost. And unless you go to Flinders or UQ which you can get fed loans which you need to pay back, for the other schools, you need either to have rich parents or get loan from a predatory private lender like sallie Mae. To add on AUS salary is less than American salary and the training is longer. GP (family doctor) make 250k AUD which is only 112k usd post tax vs 150k-170k usd as a FM in USA. FM training is 3 years, shortest in Australia is GP which is 5 years. Radiologist in USA is 4 years, radiologist training in AUS is 7-12 years depending on how lucky you are
