"Motrin and water." Let's here some stories about how the military dropped the ball with your injuries.

I've got two.

The first time I was having this issue where I would wake up in the middle of the night with debilitating stomach pain. I'd just roll around in my bed grimacing and sweating for about 20 minutes before it would subside. After two or three times of this I went to sick call and complained to the medic. He told me I had indigestion and gave me some kind of antacid. I made sure he knew it was not indigestion but he didn't care and sent me on my way. Next afternoon I was practicing for funeral detail when the pain hit and I couldn't do anything but lay on a toughbox and writhe. My squad leader sent me to the aid station where I was promptly chewed the fuck out by the medic's PSG for coming to the aid station outside of sick call hours and then seen by the same medic who again said it was indigestion. About 0500 the next day I woke up with the pain but this time I hit the bathroom and shit out straight black tar digested blood. Not long after that we had a surprise barracks inspection instead of PT and I got lucky (I guess) and puked up more clotted black blood along with some nice fresh red blood. I showed my SL and he grabbed me and took me to the aid station himself. He got in a shouting match with the medic PSG in front of everyone at sick call for blowing me off twice and now I was bleeding internally. It was sweet. I went to the hospital and it turned out I had bleeding stomach ulcers. Yay. "Indigestion."

The second time was on my last jump to keep me on airborne status before I ETS’d. It was a nice day but a gust of wind came along about 50 feet up and I landed all kinds of fucked up and hurt my shoulder. I couldn’t even lift my arm above my head to get my kit bag on my shoulders. When I got home I took off my uniform and my shoulder was all bruised up. A few days later a big ole’ lipoma had grown on my shoulder and I still couldn’t lift my arm to the front without pain. I went to sick call and the PA looked at it and told me it would go away and prescribed me 800mg Motrin (huge surprise) and gave me a 24 hour no upper body profile. Oh boy I’m all fixed! I sucked it up for another week before I got worried I wouldn’t pass my ETS physical so I decided to go to the brigade clinic and get a second opinion. I told the doctor there what happened. He checked me out, did some tests, got an MRI, and then diagnosed me with a torn anterior deltoid. Luckily it wasn’t a full tear so I didn’t need surgery that would have kept me in the Army as a broke dick (and possibly got me stop-lossed) for months.

Can you imagine going to a civilian doctor and saying, “Hi, I was in a parachuting accident and now my arm is funny colors, a fatty tumor has grown on the hurt area, and I can’t lift my arm above my head.” and being given a shrug and some Motrin? Sounds like a great malpractice lawsuit!
