MRW a guy talks to me about how MRA's are more important than feminism in today's society...

JDI was founded in 1980 by Russell Dan Smith as People Organized to Stop the Rape of Imprisoned Persons (POSRIP) and was soon renamed Stop Prisoner Rape. In 2008, the organization changed its name to Just Detention International, in recognition of its work in all forms of detention and beyond the United States.[1] Two of the organization’s early leaders were Tom Cahill and Stephen Donaldson (also known as “Donny the Punk”).[2]

Like many of the people involved in the beginning days of the organization, Smith, Cahill, and Donaldson were all survivors of rape behind bars. Donaldson died in 1996 as a result of AIDS, having contracted HIV during a sexual assault in jail.[3]

I wouldn't have a problem men's issues falling under feminism, if that were actually how it worked out in reality. Like I pointed out in my other response, Just Detention's website has been linked to by /r/mensrights several times, but not by /r/feminism. Searching for the name on both subreddits gives you one result on /r/feminism with 4 upvotes and 4 comments, and several results on /r/mensrights including one with 260 upvotes and 66 replies.

You can see the same thing if you such for male-issue specific terms like 'alimony', 'paternity' and 'custody' on /r/feminism. Less than a page of results for each of them, when you get pages and pages and pages of results on /r/mensrights. Feminist circles just don't seem to talk about men's issues very often unless they're telling men to stop talking about men's issues because feminism is supposed to include men's issues.

That's why I don't like it when people say 'Feminism means gender equality for everyone so there's no need for a men's rights movement!'. Feminists may theoretically support men's issues, but they're (understandably) not the focus of feminism, therefore we need MRAs to actually make people aware of the fact that the other 50% of the world can be hurt by gender roles.
