I’ve tried for the longest time to think of flags for planets that don’t look god-awful (looking at you, Martian Congressional Republic!). Since most proposals in fiction and online for these types of flags tend to be eyesores, I tried to make mine as appealing as possible, using a complimentary colour pallet and meaningful(ish) symbolism, hoping to avoid the horrible red-blue-green combination that often plagues this incredibly niche subgenre.

The white background symbolises the purity and progress that Mars strives to achieve, while also being a meaningful reversal of the trope of Terran nations having red which symbolises ‘glory’ or ‘blood’ in their flags. Mars wants to overcome these barbaric notions, and this is reflected in the choice of white.

The orange and black stripes represent both the physical view of Mars from Space, while the Black specifically symbolises the unknown, and knowledge which Mars strives for.

The central symbol is the astrological sign of Mars, with the arrow having the added context of pointing towards the black, symbolising Mars’ progress as a nation.

Meanwhile, the symbols for Phobos (top left) and Deimos (bottom right) are placed in orbit around the planet, acknowledging the large populations that these now non-existent bodies support through their deconstruction and conversion into orbital habitats.

I really hope you enjoy the flag; it went through several iterations (aka me fiddling with colours to try and get the best look for an hour), and I’m very happy with how it turned out. Any feedback is greatly appreciated!
