Isn't that just the fancy word for "I'm a colossal asshole to everyone around me"?

I have a friend who has always been mentally unstable, there's definitely something wrong with him.

But then one day some years back he got diagnosed with BPD and then just became a hundred times worse, basically doing the "woe is me, there's no cure" and "I'm only doing X coz I have BPD so it's not my fault" type shit. None of our social circle even slightly enabled it though so he eventually stopped doing that shit. Whether or not he has it or something else, I can't really say. But I have never had a good experience with someone who explicitly identifies with their alleged mental illnesses, and when it's something like BPD they are identifying as, then I want nothing to do with them.
