I think a lot of people don't really see the hypocrisy.
Now, I'm not saying "redskin" isn't a racial slur, it is.
But, most people grew up without being taught that it was. It doesn't carry the same negative connotation that other slurs do.
On top of that, a lot are clueless to the prejudices Native American's still face. If you grew up near a reservation, you're probably aware of it. Most of the country doesn't live near one. I've never met anyone who was Native American (not counting the assholes who say "Oh I'm 1/16th blah blah blah). If I were to meet someone who was, I'd probably say "Wow that's awesome!" Which is how I think most people would react in my area and many others. People just don't realize the adversity many Native American's still face.
So I think that's the biggest problem which leads people to not see the hypocrisy in a statement like the OP. "Redskin" just does not hold the same emotional weight as slurs like the N word (even realizing it's a slur, it still doesn't hold that same weight for me).
