NO MORE GAMING ON YOUTUBE? - Dude Soup Podcast #136

From my non-content creator perspective, it seems that the big reason Twitch is so much more financially viable than YouTube for content creators is the bits/subscriptions service which allow users to directly donate to the streamers. It seems to me YouTube could satisfy creators' revenue issues by incorporating its own donation system similar to Twitch. Hell, I think YouTube could cut out Patreon as a middle man and allow options for donor-only perks like special or early videos. Psychologically, viewers would be far more likely to directly donate to creators if YouTube created its own "gameified" bits-like service (to distance donations from real life currency) and then allowed channels to incorporate conspicuous donation buttons into the end cards or in the descriptions. I think the guys were absolutely right that YouTube Red was advertised incorrectly, I think marketing it as a way to directly help creators would be far more effective than what actually happened with Red. In my ideal world, this hypothetical YouTube bits system would be advertised with its own ads, appealing to people's empathy, depicting famous content creators thanking the user for their support, and guilting users for using Adblockers. As mobile games have shown, the internet is full of upper-middle class pre-teens with access to daddy's credit card, enough to possibly fund YouTube channels entirely on their own, without even the need for ad-revenue.
