tl;dw, zinc has been shown to shut down activity of RNA-dependent RNA polymerase which is how viruses such as those in the coronavirus family replicate. CHLOROQUINE and its derivatives act as zinc ionophores, which basically means that it will increase the concentration of intracellular zinc so that it can shut down viral replication machinery.

Now saying that, most of these studies are not directly related to COVID-19 but rather coronaviruses in general, so that is why the idea to utilize chloroquine in medical care related to COVID-19 even began. Regardless of having perfect studies directly related to our crisis right now, increasing amounts of anecdotal evidence from healthcare professionals around the world using hydroxychloroquine in conjunction with azithromycin is hopeful for those infected. Some docs also have been using hydroxychloroquine in combination with just zinc supplements and that has been quite effective, the science does back this stuff up even if it's not 100% known. That combined with the fact that the risk in using this combination is pretty minimal for majority of patients makes me want to bet on this combo to at least flatten the curve/decrease the amount of possible deaths in the near future.

Personal note - imagine trying to shut down a possible medical treatment that can save thousands of lives in the pursuit of partisan politics. The president suggesting a drug combination to healthcare providers based on the possible hundreds of suggestions by medical professionals all over the world isn't just some rando "pushing a drug", it's being used globally to great effect. The only difference is we don't have this disgusting partisan hatred of each other that persists in america in other countries so they can actually have some rational discussion.
