Orphans, immigrants and the elderly - What happens to those who society forgets about? [X-post /r/DarkWorldbuilding]

For most? Nothing good, a lot of the time. Like most places IRL, immigrants are typically unwelcome and the majority of them live in poverty. The usual hate crimes can be expected, but I like to think they're extremely rare in all but the most xenophobic places.

Orphans in some countries get shoved into orphanages (that are sometimes akin to a can of sardines), but some slip through the cracks. Living on the streets isn't easy for anyone, let alone a child. Occasionally one will make a name for themself, but that's few and far in between.

The treatment of the elderly is a bit more varied. Some cultures and communities take care of their elders, and some have a "fuck you, I've got mine" attitude toward elders. It's a roll of the dice, really.

It's not all doom and gloom, though. The [Zygothi country I haven't named yet] welcomes immigrants due to religious reasons and has programs for taking care of the elderly (if you can deal with the religious stuff it's a pretty sweet deal). Not only that, but most nomadic Alsenian tribes are quick to adopt orphans regardless of race. So while many of society's forgotten get screwed over, there's still a pretty good chance that they can live a good life.
