"What is the point when you could avoid this?" is a clear demonstration that they're not genuinely ready to be asking.

Even if they genuinely wanted to know, the real answer is borderline inexplicable without experience anyway. Weird analogy but, it's akin to explaining to someone who's never sipped a beer or touched any "substance", how one LSD trip flipped your entire life's perspective, exposed all your faults to yourself in a gentle light, and set you on a new path from that day forward. It might be a pretentious grown-up explanation to say they wouldn't get it, but it's obviously true, so "what's the point."
