'People think we don't love life': Iraq holds first beauty pageant since 1972

ok let's try and unpack this.

i dont buy this modern idea that if you do something out of your own 'free will' then it is a sacred choice and you cant blame society for it. well im sorry but if today i enter into a 100% voluntary contract with an employer there is a HUGE element of coercion in this choice.

for one, i live in a society where if i dont have money i am completely marginalized and liable to end up homeless and then dead in a ditch somewhere. to have access to some dignity and a decent standard of living I HAVE TO enter into this 'voluntary' contract whereby I sell my labour, prostituting my time and effort as it were, so i can produce surplus value for my employer who in turn exploits me by paying me far less than the value of what i produce. this is the reality of work today so please dont tell me that i WILLINGLY CHOSE to find a job.

so in the same way i live in a capitalist society that forces me into ostensibly 'voluntary' activities, so too do we live in a patriarchal society, arranged to conform to MALE standards, that forces women into seemingly 'voluntary' activities.

yes she WILLINGLY spent hundreds of dollars on concealers, eyeliners, foundation, lipstick, etc., BUT WHO IS SHE TRYING TO PLEASE?? for whose gaze???? where are women getting their standards of beauty from??? lookup how the bikini was invented...or who created victoria's secret..etc. why the fuck do you think feminism exists. our society is radically organized by males, for male hegemony. there are literally thousands of examples of this.

so again, i dont buy this line of thinking that because these ladies participated willingly then they are free of blame. what kind of fucking example are they setting for little girls...that its okay to be paraded around stage having people judge you for your body?? and who the fuck created these standards of beauty anyway??
