People who killed their pets on accident how did you cope with the guilt?

Not me, but my best friend’s parents when we were little kids.

One summer day, they parked their car in the driveway, went in the house, and forgot their golden retriever in the trunk. By the time they realized he was in there, it was too late.

They are truly some of the kindest, loving, genuinely nice people I’ve ever known, who love their dogs so, so much. Their dogs are so well taken care of - they get so much stimulation, exercise, and love. I don’t think they have ever gotten over what happened, and they never will. It still breaks my heart to think about it. I assume they had a lot on their mind that day, or were distracted, and the dog was so quiet in the trunk that they just forgot he was in there.

To make matters sadder, their next golden retriever passed away very suddenly and unexpectedly while they were on vacation abroad, and they didn’t get to say goodbye. She was completely fine in the afternoon, and gone by bedtime. Her heart burst in her chest. I was the pet sitter watching their dogs while they were abroad, and had to call them and break the news.
