Lindegaard - I actually felt for him a bit - clearly under instructions to pass the ball out but an even higher press from CA meant there were 3 players marking our backline, who weren't doing much to find space so it got a bit raggedy at times. Defensively looked assured, wasn't threatened much.

McNair - Without doing too much right or wrong I felt encouraged by his performance. I have faith in Paddy. Not much chemistry with Lindgard but that's understandable. Did his 1st team chances no harm and hopefully will get minutes this season

Smalling - Our best defender and definitely led the backline. Along with Basti the only player barking orders on the pitch. Hopefully he continues to grow into the CB he needs to be.

Evans - Not great. Frustrates me because he should be so much better. Learnt the game under Vida n Rio. Comfortable on the ball. Almost two footed .Pacier than he looks. Why has he declined since 2011 when he had a boss season alongside Rio? I don't know. Not seeing anything to reward my faith over the years. You can almost see him second guess himself everytime he's looking for a pass, deciding whether to press or tackle or stand off in defence. Leads to wrong decisions in basic spots.

Blackett - Improved as the half went on but didn't impress me. Given his performances last season he should have been better. Didn't help Evans and Lindegaard out. Didn't find Pereira enough. Looked apprehensive to get involved at times. Harsh analysis maybe but he's better than what he showed. It's more critical than ever for the youngsters to impress any chance you get at the moment given the spending and that just won't cut it.

Pereira - Desperately needs more game time. Real talent. Will no doubt have left LVG wanting to see more.

Lingard - Bright, energetic and wanted to impress. The dynamic of the game didn't really allow him to showcase what he can do. A harsh analysis would say he should have come back and demanded the ball more.

Herrera - Huge Herrera fan so going to be critical. H
