[Post Match Thread] Manchester United 2-0 Chelsea

United really impressed me today with how versatile they were today, they showed the ability to play possession around the box whilst waiting for space, or they were able to take the more direct approach into Rashford. First half United were brilliant in spreading Chelsea to the point of isolating the wingbacks and creating a 2v1 situation using their pace for the overlaps Townsend and Zaha were brilliant in their positioning in these areas. Chelseas defensive issues carried onto this game and they often show when the ball ends up just before the defence, they don’t organise themselves quick enough, there’s no leader instructing where the line is based leading to confusion. You can see a similar goal scored with Aguero’s against City they fail to get sufficient support to Cahill leaving him in the split decision whether to come in or stay wide, today he didn’t make the correct decision and this is where the goal comes from. Whereas if you look at the United back line they were organised and set up early limiting the space. I think Chelseas build up play was entirely wrong for today playing out from the back only allowed United to set up defensively with the wingers tucking in to provide cover to the fullbacks who would go central leaving a very compact shape. Chelsea needed to go direct from the back and disrupt the shape early on, but instead it was the same formula for the game to knock it around the edge of the box and wait for space. I know it’s been repeated but Arsenal do not have enough leaders in the squad. Nobody organising, nobody grabbing the game by the scruff of the neck and trying something different. This is a squad Arsenal built. MoTM for me was Herrera he was crucial to the versatility they played today linking up with Rashford when going direct and being able to competently hold possession when needed. However, Pogba also played importance in this and they both deserve it.
