Redditors from the US, what's something interesting about your state that isn't as well known?

I'm not sure if this are well-known, but I'm guessing maybe not:

  • Hawaii was its own kingdom before being overthrown by the United States, and there is a growing movement of Native Hawaiians who are demanding the U.S. government to return the kingdom to Hawaiian rule. In recent times there have been some serious steps in that direction, but disagreements over how to proceed and how to govern the future kingdom have slowed down the process. Some activists want recognition and governing power under the umbrella of the U.S., and others want to completely break away from the U.S. and become an independent nation again. It'll be very interesting to see what happens in the next 50 years.

  • The majority of Hawaii locals are bilingual, but I think most of us don't realize it. In short, when the United States started exerting power and shipping in immigrants to work on sugar plantations ~100 years ago, it accidentally caused a reverse Tower of Babel effect. People came from dozens of countries around Asia/the Pacific, and eventually the nonwhite population birthed a new language so they could communicate with each other. The new language ("Pidgin" or Hawaii Creole) is basically a mixture of Hawaiian, English, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Filipino languages, Portuguese, etc. put together according to Hawaiian grammar and intonation.

Today most locals speak this language ("Pidgin" or Hawaii Creole) and English. The reason most of us don't know we're bilingual is simple politics. Pretty much everyone 40 or older grew up being told that Pidgin was "broken English" or "stupid English." They got beaten for speaking it in school instead of English, even though they couldn't speak or understand English. 2015 was the first year our state recognized it as a real, separate and fully developed language. My generation is the first one allowed to speak Pidgin in college and write University-level papers in Pidgin. I'll never forget the huge grin on my auntie's face when I told her she was never stupid for speaking Pidgin, she was just bilingual.
