Redditors in hiring positions: What small things immediately make you say no to the potential employee? Why?

I do that too. I like to extract a lot of information from the interviewers about their tech stack, best practices, work life balance, etc.

The last job interview I went on the company owner was saying: "Don't worry about the salary" and was telling me how competent their staff was, took me out to fancy restaurants, etc. Come interview time, I started asking the staff at the company lots of indepth questions -- basically trying to figure out what I'd be doing.

Let's just say their tech stack and version control is something I would've built or used pre-2008. Then on top of that [as lead software developer] I'd be responsible for racking and stacking servers, patching, etc. Let's just say my salary ask at the final step of the interview was quite a lot higher than they assumed it was going to be to compensate for the amount of work required, and they then decided to "change directions" regarding the position. ;)
