In a fictional universe where ships move from almost a standstill to lightspeed in less then a second as I mentioned in the original post,

You know how in space travel movies and books the ship often goes from zero to lightspeed in a second? I thought they needed a new system because that much change in velocity through the use of burning fuel or using any sort of limited energy, is ridiculous. I propose that they (see, I didn't move goalposts, you just couldn't see them. Unless you are arguing that a dyson sphere is more possible to create) have a ring

then

the heat of all the kinetic energy being applied to their bodies would vaporize them—even turn them into plasma.

So the ring is more fuel efficient with the same result anyway.
