Why are there so few great science fiction movies?

TBH, there have been several attempts, but they did not go as planned. I had big hopes for Valerian, but it flopped. So did the latest Alien franchise endeavors, Jupiter Ascending, and Predator. But the focus for escapism now appears to be fantasy in the way of superhero movies, which, like sci fi, are quite costly and for the most part yielding decent stories and box office success. Guardians of the Galaxy is set in space, but it is more fantasy like Star Wars. But there were some successes, like Edge of Tomorrow, Interstellar, Blade Runner, The Martian, Ready Player One, and Arrival. There are some coming that look interesting, such as Mortal Engines, Alita: Battle Angel, Avatar 2, Chaos Walking, Dune, Artemis, Attack on Titan, and Tarantino's Star Trek. Hopefully these will be successful.
