My extremely limited exposure to a few one hit wonder creatives (not blockbuster level) is that they had a muse who they refused to reward or acknowledge (I think to themselves even). One particular one of note was a casting agent who just knew his creative shit when it came to all things movie. He would nudge good hires, he would nudge script alterations, he would even nudge directors in the right direction. Then they would move on past him and not do so well.

Another was a guy who ran a recording studio. He would take fairly crappy artists and help them get a hit. They would then move on to the "big time" and work with a "better" studio, never able to reproduce their success there. Then they would return after a few crap albums, make another with this guy and success, only to then go back to the "better" studio for some more failure.

And the same with a music manager. This guy kept finding gems, launching their careers, and then watching about half their careers die the moment they found a new manager. People regularly would accuse him of blacklisting them after leaving him when it was quite the opposite, he wanted them to succeed it was just that he had been the guiding hand.

I have also read about some major director/producer successes who had girlfriends and wives who were the real talent behind their successes, but as a team. Divorce/breakups would then ruin the magic and neither could do much but coast for an entire career on their original success.

I highly suspect someone else is was the guiding hand behind the wachovskis, someone who reigned in their worst impulses, someone who suggested little extra magical bits. My guess is it is that person who created bullet time, the cat, the red/blue pill, names like neo, etc. It was the wachovskis who came up with the duracell.
