[Rodina ST17] Sharing some thoughts on this Nomos homage/copy

I made a drunk impulse purchase of this watch and it came in today so I wanted to share some thoughts and give pros and cons of the watch. Rodina ST17 is known as a copycat version of the Nomos Tangente. More information can be found on this review.

Pros:

  • Affordable (~$120)
  • Sea-Gull ST17 movement is not the worst movement for a cheap watch
  • Design (basically looks exactly like Nomos Tangente) if you like the Bauhaus style

Cons:

  • Loud rotor
  • Accuracy (I haven't had a chance to time it but it seems to vary among people)
  • Build (again, I read some saying it broke after a few months)
  • Surprise factors
  • Serif font on the face which contradicts the design

I'll elaborate a bit on the surprise factors. It's regarding the true colour of the dial and the hands. I'm not sure if it's visible from the pictures but the face is not actually white. It's closer to eggshell. Also I was under the impression that the hands would be blue but as you can see from the photos, it appears black when not reflecting light.

Generally, despite these surprises, I like the look of the watch and am satisfied with the purchase because of how cheap it is. The build quality and movement accuracy aren't obviously top notch relative to more expensive watches but again, I'd say it's very good for its price.

I do have to say that I am a bit off put by how loud the rotor is and it's somewhat unpleasant to listen to in silence. The leather strap that came with it is actually quite comfortable because it's soft. But it's really short (if you have a big wrist) and feels very cheap so I'll be changing it.

All in all, I think this is a good pick up if Nomos Tangente, Stowa Antea, and other high end Bauhaus watches are out of your price range. If you want to purchase this, I'd also consider Tissel (Korean brand with Miyota 9015 movement). It is very similar in terms of price and design. Miyota 9015 movement is reviewed well.
