Ronaldo is playing like Andy Carroll: the only thing poorer than Portugal is the tournament itself

What's bad about it is that you've managed to do the same thing the journalist did but in two sentences. Analysed and given a precise summary of the tournament. Portugal's football has hardly lit up the tournament. What's bad about it is from a journalistic point of view is that the author hasn't added anything of value or a particular insight, it reads more as if he is a bitter man having a moan and slapping the label of "opinion piece" on it to get away with it. What did you learn from reading it? Ronaldo is getting old and he sucks now. Portugal suck. The Euro's suck. The Euro qualifiers suck. Did I mention Ronaldo lost his pace?

This could've have been an in-depth, well researched and balanced review of an international competition making it's tentative debut of a new format that we might one day see applied to the World Cup. Instead, I'm left wondering what on earth his point was. It needs France or Germany to redeem itself because the rest of the Euro's has been so poor/Portugal got to the final/24 teams is a failure.

Does a big name really need to win the tournament to make it a success? Is there not joy in watching a cohesive and organised team stand up to giant names and giant countries and be able to match them? To set up a system and style of play that can neutralise and even overwhelm an antiquated, out-dated, ill-organised team of well-known names. Looking at you England. This should be a wake up call to many countries and clubs. Leicester won the league. Iceland toppled England. Wales made it to the semi-finals. On the merits of organisation and teamwork. Working their systems.

How is Wales making to the final a great thing, but Ireland and N. Ireland making it to the last 16 an embarrassment. If you're going by name and reputation alone.

"The draw for the last 16 was not what the sponsors wanted. It has absolutely killed the tournament."

Oh right. Not what the sponsors wanted. Sums it up. The Euros hasn't been sexy enough.

We've let too many teams in, we need to get rid of the weird foreigners. I mean who cares about Albania, right?

That ain't journalism.

Portugal have somehow scrapped and scraped their way to the final. They have been uninspiring, lucky and to top it off they are epitomised by Ronaldo, a man who walks a fine line between ego and ambition. He's easy to hate, Portugal are easy to hate.
