It's the Wednesday before Easter in 1966. The setting is Midland, Texas, where cousins of mine lived within 5 blocks of the Bushes. My cousin, Danny Lee, was driving home from church that night when he decided to stop for some food at a local dine in. As he's leaving the dine in to return home (having promised his dad, my great uncle that he'd be home by 10:00 pm) he runs into three obviously intoxicated young boys, aged 19-20. George W. was among the three boys. The boys ask my cousin Danny if they can use his car for a few minutes. Danny, aged 17, does the sensible thing and politely refuses. The boys become more aggressive about wanting to take the car joyriding, and eventually tensions boil to the point where one of the three boys breaks a glass beer bottle over Danny's head, and all three start start to kick and beat him to a bloody pulp. Once he was unconscious, the boys loaded him into the back of the car and drove him to his parents house. They left him in the car in the driveway, and then they ran off. About an hour later my great Uncle discovered him, and he and his wife rushed him to the hospital. Once he was in the hospital being treated, he regained consciousness and was able to relay the story of what happened to him, as well identifying the three boys that did this to him. About an hour later the police rounded the three still intoxicated boys up and Danny Lee confirmed it was them. The following morning, Danny Lee started going into seizures, until he was rushed into emergency brain surgery. He never woke up from the surgery, remaining in a vegetative state until the next day, Good Friday, when my great uncle and aunt decided to pull the plug. My family, including my grandmother, then mourned him over Easter weekend. Follow up: George H.W., then a rising political star, was able to prevent his son from facing criminal charges, and the whole thing was hushed up. A few years later the Bush family settled with my cousin's family in civil court for a pretty hefty sum. I swear on my life that to my knowledge everything I wrote above is true. I got all of my information from my grandmother, who mourned her nephew that Easter back in 1966, while 19 year old George Bush would later catapult to becoming the leader of the free world.
