While these platforms are being astroturfed by domestic terrorists and foreign adversaries to some degree (as well as by groups that you like), the fact of the matter is that many Americans and people in general actually are racist, hateful, bigoted people and they love being able to share their ideas with each other. Millions of Americans know the Central Park 5 were exonerated by DNA evidence but still like that Trump called for their execution and never walked that back. Lots of Americans like sharing trans suicide rates or black crime statistics because they genuinely enjoy reveling in other people’s struggles and suffering. Social media has enabled people to express these thoughts anonymously and the genie can’t be put back in the bottle without infringing on 1st amendment rights. People can freely share cherrypicked yet factual information that reinforces their worldview thanks to these platforms and after years and years of thousands of dopamine hits from getting angry at those f-word libtards online and sharing “the truth about blacks/gays/liberals etc” they’ll be perfectly primed to vote for someone who can harness the hatred and spite they love from Trump with actual discipline and competency.
