[Serious] Teachers of reddit, what was the saddest thing you've discovered about one of your students?

She is in denial because she could not cope with the idea her son has a disability, religion is just an excuse for avoidance (thought I don’t claim I am 100% certain as I am not her). I know a fair few people are exactly like that. It’s brutal for the child I know. People like this will only turn the other way if you force her to admit she is wrong. A good way to help the son is to ease your way in and convince her by letting her know you are here to help. Trust me, this is a better way. Not only encourage her to get a diagnose, but also help her to accept and get treatments on her will. To care for kids with disability requires love and dedication (and you know this). It needs to come from the heart, not being forced to. I have spoken to more professionals, parents and kids with disabilities than I would like. It has been a journey that’s too long and tiring.

I never said she is allowed to mistreat her son just because it’s tough so I am not going dwell on that. All I am offering is a different perspective.
