My mom and I had been traveling back and forth from Indio, CA while her mom was dying in the hospital. I was about 5 years old, and at one of our stops at a gas station on the way home from seeing grandma, a homeless-looking man asked us for some money so he could eat. My mom, being alone with just me at this empty gas station, got a little spooked and said we had no money for him. When we were inside the gas station waiting to pay for whatever we needed, I told her, “Mama, why didn’t you give him money? I think he was an angel,” and feeling so guilty about that, she got cash back at the register to give to the man. When we went back outside to our car and to look for the man, he had just disappeared. There was only one other car in the parking lot besides us. Sure, he could have just run off into the desert, but... I dunno. I have thought about him every once in awhile these past 20 years!
