This happened to my mom not long ago. First though, a description of her house. She lives on her own in the mountains near Napa, Ca. When you are there, it feels pretty cut off even though she has neighbors reasonably close. However, there are trees all over the property so you can't even see the fence around the property, let alone our neighbors. She has neighbors on two sides and someone's unused property on the other. It is a really nice place, but I always get a weird vibe there (mostly because I saw The Strangers the first night I ever stayed there.)
Her house has one wall of these big, tall, floor to ceiling windows looking out on the valley (the side with the undeveloped land), which is to say looking out on a fuckton of trees with a smidgen of mountain on the horizon. You get pretty used to hearing things like birds or animals hitting the glass when you stay there. I mean she gets at least one bird smacking into the glass a day.
Anyway, the creepy part. One afternoon my mom was out gardening with the family dog in tow. They were walking back to the house when my mom heard a loud CRACK! CRACK! It made her jump, and it made our dog run and hide. She saw that one of the windows was cracked, nearly to shattering. They were these fancy schmancy double layer tempered glass windows designed to be crazy durable, so the fact that they were nearly shattered was a pretty big deal.
On closer inspection, it was clear that somebody had shot the window. there were two bullet holes within a couple of inches of each other. She called the police, who confirmed that yes, somebody shot out her window with a small caliber gun. The creepy thing about it though is it was highly likely that the shots were made from on our property. They had a ballistics guy come from SF, who ruled out ricochet from elsewhere, and from all the likely places the shots could have come from off property, they were way more likely to hit a tree first. The shots were high up on the window, but probably came from down the slope of the hill. Basically someone came onto her property and either tried to shoot out her window or tried to shoot at her or my dog and missed.
TL:DR Someone came onto my mom's property and shot out one of her windows, possibly while trying to shoot her or my dog.
