SF/F SJW goes on a complete cartoon villain rant about conquering and replacing Lovecraft

sulu...little disrespectful

My view ia more neither side is wrong (setting aside "respectful of sulu's expressed wishes pre film release"). to stop myself going on a long rant i'll just say "schrodinger's canon" (a phrase i love) means that this move both retroactively changes 60s series character but also clearly doesn't and serves as a metatexual nod to takai's personal advocacy. good intentions were combined with a valid vision of adaption was met with a reasonable person's disagreement based on canon implications.

knowingly expanding a universe in an attempt to spite or shame the original creator

no, that's a nonauthor saying that. I'm not so sure. What are your thoughts on the wide sargasso sea? does it matter that it's not published under "the jane eyre universe of books volume X"?

The random twitter person was being a dick but i'm not sure that a very similar thing obviously fails. I don't think engaging in a critical manner with aspects of a great writer's universe gets boiled down to

"if it makes you feel better, then that's all that matters."

and there are legitimately interesting ways SJWs can adapt the work well (and ways it could be a dumpster fire). on one level it's retconing the vision of the author in his own world on another hand it's basically 4 people writing about a similar universe thinking about lovecraftian worlds with a different slant.
