Shootings targeting homeless men in New York and Washington, DC are linked, police say

Idk maybe they should look to other countries that don’t have massive homeless problems and ask them what they have done to keep homelessness low. But I mean stuff like free health care, better mental health care, better aftercare for veterans, public health efforts to de-stigmatize mental health, easy to access addiction programs and improving addiction programs using science backed methods, improving the foster care system would be a big one, more help for teens leaving the foster care system instead of just dumping them into the street(you should see the stats on how many foster care kids end up on the streets after they age out of the system), teaching budgeting/finance and life skills in public schools, better public education(literacy rates are shit, schools are underfunded, teachers are underpaid), harm reduction programs, having police officers trained in mental health to respond to mental health crisis calls like some stations have actual done that and it’s been really helpful in those situations, rehabilitation in prison, and some cities have made it difficult for police officers to arrest and keep homeless in jail who are repeatedly violent offenders- so make it so those people can be arrested and not immediately released but again this goes hand in hand with prisons needing to have rehabilitation programs and more mental health services for mentally I’ll inmates because as it stands those people go in and get no help to turn their lives around and come out even worse off then before. Also programs for them to work like my city has a program where precariously housed or homeless people can work as needle hunters which kills two birds with one stone because the streets get cleaned up of paraphanaelia and it gives those people a way to earn money and something to do. It’s a complex problem and right now mostly what’s being done is programs like shelters and soup kitchen which is a bandaid solution. People are going to whine and say well that stuff costs money! Well do you want the issue fixed or not? Because it’s not going to fix itself.
