Singapore joins Japan and France on banning e-scooters on footpaths

Taking a back seat and allowing for “self-regulation” of markets results in corporations doing whatever as long as it is financially feasible, and those who suffer typically have less voice (money is strongly correlated to power) anyway so it takes a long time for anything to happen.

Imagine if corporations buy more control of private newspapers and don’t choose to publish news like the aunty’s death, or even just ramped up advertising pretending there isn’t a problem. People who get in accidents (caused by speeding or battery fires) may not be vocal about the problems and fewer are aware of them. In other countries, corporations may even lobby political representatives to vote against regulatory laws. What happens?

(See the opioid crisis for a more extreme example.)

Although it isn’t a black/white case of regulation vs no regulation, as many delivery riders’ livelihoods may be affected, a completely free market is similar to a communist society: neither really produces the desired outcomes in reality considering human nature.
