SMC was unique in that their residential community (and some significant donors) took a stand early on, and Gayner really didn't have much choice but to go with that flow and follow up on those commitments. He certainly deserves some credit for being willing to listen to the community and displease his guru, but it's not like was the one leading that charge. And he always framed that choice to true believers like a business necessity, not as something that he actually wanted. It was bottom up, not top down. (And, Gayner was the personal attendant of Mipham during the years when he was really churning and burning through the ladies.)

Really, if a teacher has abused his students and won't commit to a very simple promise to not do it anymore, denying them access to students at your center is the bare minimum.
