Soundcheck Saturday and Sunday - May 28, 2016

Hey guys,

I read out stories on YT along with gameplay videos. Over the year of doing this I have been struggling with good audio, and consistency. Recently I have tried fiddling with compressor settings, but it’s proving to be tough. I am a pretty relaxed dude; my voice can go from quiet to somewhat loud. There are some stories, which require me keeping a quiet tone. I have found myself hitting a catch-24. If I add a compressor to level out my audio, the EQ gets all boomy and boxy. I have found myself on multiple occasions going “yep, these are my settings” only to find during recordings they sound awful.

Here’s an example using compressor threshold of -30 db: https://soundcloud.com/theecondgent/30-threshold

With the -30db, I can hear mouth sounds a lot more, so I assume the compression was too much here.

My setup is: Preamp/Mixer (MG10XU) > UX2 audio interface.

I use the compressor on Pod Farm 2. There’s a slight boost of low end and middle frequency but not a lot. I have also added some compression from the MG10XU because I found this kept everything levelled.

I can provide pictures of the settings on my compressor if that helps.

Here’s an example of -27 threshold compression: https://soundcloud.com/theecondgent/for-reddit

I’d like my audio to be loud and clear. In the past I have had my audio range from -6db to 0db and it wasn’t loud at all. With these settings, I can hear the improvements; just wishing the audio wasn’t so muddy. If you guys can help me get my audio sorted, that would be a lot to me. I waited for this thread to appear because I am unsure who else to ask for help on the matter.

Thank you for reading!!!
