[Spoilers] The Force Awakens: An explanation of a potential plot hole and directions for Episode VIII.

Now you are narrowing the definition of plot hole as it is defined in the sources that we have both agreed about. Those weren't the criteria that you pointed to before. The weak explanation in exposition that Rey gives points to the part of the definition on wikipedia "Plot holes are usually seen as weaknesses or flaws in a story." I believe the explanation is a weakness.

Furthermore, you can't point to the term itself and say, that is what is meant. Remember that means I have to accept your definition of the term. We have already agreed on the sources we will be using. Argue from those definitions.

Finding a set of circumstances unlikely is a plot hole. In fact, that is in the definition I gave: "unlikely events or chance occurrences." Find a better definition or explanation. You are resorting to asking me to accept your understanding of what is important. You are not an authority. Neither am I. The term is not being overused. Lots of stories have plot holes. This does not make them better for the plot hole.

I do not sound like an authority. The definitions are the authority. You are free to point out your own definition that refutes mine. In most instances in this thread people start off by discounting the use of the term "plot hole" without defining plot hole. They aren't arguing from a third party authority. They want me to accept them as the authority. In other words, who says plot holes are focused on too much? Why not start by defining how plot holes are used to much by giving an article which explains the idea in further detail. Again, no one defines the term. They simply say, plot holes are overused. If you start of an argument with that then it forces the person making the argument to define the term.

You started this conversation with a potential sarcastic insult: "I think the use of the term "plot hole" in the modern vernacular is being blown out of proportion by wannabe movie critics." That is how you started the this conversation. Sarcasm is never the most polite response. Argue the facts instead.

Plot holes are part of storytelling. They are not intentional. I stated in my article that I accept the plot holes in A New Hope. You don't have to ignore them because you don't have to relegate any story with a plot hole to poorly planned stories. You don't have to ignore them. You can discuss them and potentially come to an agreement that maybe in further movies they can be resolved. Saying that only poorly planned stories have plot holes is to suggest that the writers are perfect. They are not.
