State of the Oilers Franchise: Post Deadline

Breakdown of players in the organization. If you made it through the first part some of this might be a bit redundant.

Forwards

Jordan Eberle- signed through 2018/19: Eberle to be is the definition of a one way player but what he brings at the one end of the ice is tremendous. He is the one high end Oilers player that I would consider moving but only if it was to bring back a top pairing defenseman. With no replacements in the system he's not a guy you trade just because you're impatient and want to make a move.

Matt Fraser- rfa: He's had some solid stretches this year but in my view he's not good enough for the top 6 and there are likely better options for the third line. He's a potential non tender candidate but could also stay on as the 13th forward or find himself in Bakersfield next season.

Luke Gazdic- signed through next year: Gazdic brings everything he can on the ice and is willing to stick up for his teammates. That said he's not an NHL regular. He possibly makes the team playing the odd game or is sent down to Bakersfield.

Boyd Gordon- UFA after next season: Gordon is a steadying influence for the Oilers with his solid two way play, face-off abilities, two way play etc. Hopefully the Oilers can work out a contract extension with him this summer.

Taylor Hall- signed through 2018/19: The Oilers most dynamic player able to generate offense by himself. He unfortunately has had terrible luck with injuries and the Oilers need him on the ice more consistently.

RyanHamilton- signed through next year: He was given an extension recently and has played better than expected in his short stint in Edmonton. He'll be invited to camp but I have little doubt he'll end up in Bakersfield next year.

Matt Hendricks- signed through 2016/17: Hendricks like Gordon offers versitility to the Oilers with his solid 4th line play and his ability to step into centre if needed.

Rob Klinkhammer- UFA after next season: The last wagoner he's performed well since being acquired from Pittsburgh quickly becoming a fit with Hendricks and Gordon with his strong physical play.

Anton Lander- RFA: Lander performed tremendously with the OKC Barons this year as their captain and was named an all-star although he did not get to participate because he was playing with the Oilers.

Earlier this year I mentioned that he was running out of time to solidify himself as an NHL player and may be forced to play in Europe or another NHL team for an opportunity. Fortunately for Oiler fans and himself he performed very well before getting hurt looking like the solid third line player fans and management hoped he would become. I think he's definitely earned himself another contract and a shot at the third line role.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins- signed through 2018/19: The debate on Nuge seems to be whether he is a first or second line centre. Frankly I don't care, he's improved year over year at both ends of the ice including improving in the face-off dot. Nuge is the Oilers best centre and whether he becomes a legitimate number 1 or not he still is a tremendous asset to the team and can be counted on at both ends of the ice.

Iiro Pakarinen- RFA after next season: Pakarinen is a guy who scored tremendously at the AHL level this season. He seemed to play ok with the Oilers this season although hasn't really stood out. He may or may not have an NHL future but I would expect him to perform well in Bakersfield next season and earn some more looks from the big club.

Tyler Pitlick- RFA: Pitlick was given an opportunity to play on the top line this season at times by Dallas Eakins and didn't look horrible but didn't shine either. He's a big body who can skate, hit and drive the net. He was drafted as a centre and didn't look terrible there in his brief stint. It may be valuable to try him at centre but he's already shown he can provide value on the wing. He may not have the offensive ability to be a top 6 player but appears to have the tools necessary to be a valuable third line winger.

Benoit Pouliot- signed through 2018/19: Pouliot is a strong big bodied poessesion player he can pot some goals. He's performed well above my personal expectations this year and despite continuing his reputation as a player who takes brain-dead penalties at the most obnoxious times has been a very valuable player to the Oilers. His shooting percentage appears to be above sustainable levels but even if they dip next year he'll still be a very valuable player. I think he would probably be most valuable playing on the third line but as a credit to him he's been able to play up this year and not look out of place.

Teddy Purcell- UFA following next season: Purcell is not a favourite of mine probably largely because he hasn't been an overly good player and was greatly overused by Dallas Eakins. He can be used through the lineup although ideally will stick on the third line. He maybe end up as trade bait by the trade deadline next season.

Derek Roy- UFA: Roy was a player I didn't expect a ton from when he came over for Marc Arcobello. To his credit he's played much better than expected and has found some chemistry with Nail Yakupov. The Oilers will likely try to re-sign him this off-season although I personally hope it's a short term deal (max 2 years).

Nail Yakupov- RFA: The much maligned bust of the Edmonton Oilers who's defensive inadequacies are matched only by his attitude problems, desire to play in Russia and his complete lack of offense- source /r/hockey and hfboards

In all seriousness Yakupov was rightly challenged by Dallas Eakins to improve his play at both ends of the ice and wrong he wasn't rewarded when his two way play improved greatly. Under new coach Todd Nelson Yakupov was finally given an opportunity to play with a player with offensive ability in Derek Roy and has performed wonderfully.

If he continues to play aggressively, throwing his body and is allowed to work with players who can convert his passes next year should be a very good year for Nail Yakupov.
