Rishaug's observation only observes Shore's minuses. Plus/minus isn't an advanced stat.
I personally trust analytics quite a bit but Shore is a replacement level player and we gave him a replacement level contract. Of course, he's gonna be in the bottom quartile of NHL players. If he was above that, he'd be worth some amount higher than 850k and that's what we'd offer him.
Also, advanced metrics track the past, contracts pay for the future. If Shore's floor is where he is now, 850k may be a bargain even for a depth player.
I trust advanced stats for what they are, but it's difficult to evaluate a contract signing based on analytics because percentiles don't always translate well into cap dollars. If someone could point out any other available options that had significantly better advanced stats than Shore who also would have signed with us for 2x 850k, they'd have a better case to bitch about this signing.
