Study that ranks the 55 most common dream themes/subject. It's a fascinating portrait of fears. The gender differences in subject prevalence are also quite thought provoking.

The questionnaire seems certainly inadequate for determining the typical themes of dreams that individuals have often, because (1) it only asks "Have you ever dreamed of . . ." with one checkbox per theme, instead of having checkboxes for a range of frequency such as many times and at least once, then it only asks for one theme "which occured most often" and (2) listing dream themes to choose from seems likely to prompt recall of dreams that match the themes and to steer descriptions of dreams into the listed categories.

I'll try to recall some other themes of dreams, and see if this prompts anyone to recall any similar dreams (or to add their own themes to the list):

  1. not being able to speak (as when trying to respond to someone)
  2. seeing a different city
  3. wandering or exploring through hallways or paths
  4. driving, operating vehicles, problems with vehicles
  5. meeting people who make psychic predictions
  6. mindreading or having one's mind read
  7. writing
  8. being yelled at, judged, or in an argument
  9. seeing people as when they were much younger
  10. being in a war or a warzone
  11. directing or acting in a movie
  12. being in charge of others and responsible
  13. dancing
  14. playing music or being at a live music show
  15. dark night scenes where anything may be lurking (alone or along with others)
  16. going back to historical times
  17. seeing the future or technology from the future
  18. trying to get away from someone or back to something else, but they keep taking up your time with some nonsense or whatever they want to do and you can't seem to politely break away
  19. having trouble walking or running, your legs don't seem to move in a normal way
  20. being aware you're dreaming, but not sure what to do about it or what difference it makes, maybe you ask someone...
  21. secret underground bases or secret passageways
  22. spoiled food (such as in a kitchen left for many days)
  23. meeting and falling in love with someone
  24. objects change into other objects, unstable physical reality
  25. getting up and doing normal activities only to find you're still dreaming
  26. dreaming something quite difficult or rare to dream about, just to say that you can have such a dream
  27. dreaming something no one would ever really dream about, except in order to make a funny comment about it on reddit
  28. dreaming you're reading a scientific study that in the end makes no sense whatsoever and only reinforces the limitations of thought in some previous study, for example something as old and tired as a list of dream themes from 1958
